They started off with a 3-0 win over Botswana, which was followed by a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. Senegal wrapped up top spot by defeating Benin Republic 3-0 in their final group outing, setting up a clash with one of the third-placed teams that qualified for the knockout rounds – Sudan in this case.
Sudan, meanwhile, had little odds of progressing beyond the group stage but will be very content with their performances so far in Morocco.
They suffered a 3-0 defeat to Algeria in their opening Group E match, but recorded a first win by narrowly edging Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in their second match.
Despite another defeat to Burkina Faso in their group finale, the Falcons of Jediane still qualified as the third best-placed team that finished third in the group stages.
