Goalless first half in Guadalajara

Czech Republic were playing in their first World Cup tournament in 20 years, but it was South Korea who had the upper hand in the opening exchanges through Lee Kang-In, who troubled their defence on multiple occasions.

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-Min Son then had two attempts in quick succession, but he was unable to hit the target.

The first half ended goalless, with all to play for in the second.

Three goals in exciting second half

South Korea were off the blocks early in the second half and In-beom was denied by a good save from Kovar as the game remained goalless. Son was also denied by a stunning save from Kovar, although Czech went on to take the lead at the other end.

It came from a long throw which caused problems and Krejci was on hand to head home into the net to break the deadlock and put his side in front.

Then, South Korea equalized minutes later through a superb finish from the impressive In-beom, who cut in to his right foot and lifted a finish over Kovar which went in off the post.

Czech went back ahead through Tomas Soucek, but the West Ham United midfielder’s header was ruled out for offside. However, the Asian side completed the comeback as Hyeon-Gyu finished past Kovar from inside the area.

Despite Czech’s late fightback, South Korea held on to begin their campaign with a 2-1 win.
