The Nigerian forward scored his first goal at the African Cup of Nations tournament in the 4-0 win over Mozambique in yesterday’s Round of 16 clash and dedicated the goal to his sick mother.

It was his fourth appearance for the Super Eagles in Morocco and his eighth international appearance since making his debut in October.

The Sevilla forward has now been granted permission to leave the squad, but is expected to return before the quarterfinal clash against either Algeria or DR Congo on Saturday.

Victor Osimhen (2), Ademola Lookman and Adams were on the scoresheet as the Super Eagles clinched their last eight berth with an emphatic 4-0 win over Mozambique at the Fesz Stadium on Monday night.

Adams dedicates maiden AFCON goal to mother

Akor Adams made a goalscoring debut for Nigeria against Lesotho in October, but it took him four games to score his first at the African Cup of Nations.

Speaking after the win, the defender expressed gratitude and dedicated the goal to his mother, who became ill before the game.

“First, Glory to God for the privilege to have my AFCON half goal like all of you have been waiting for, but the goal is dedicated to my mom”, Adams revealed.

“She’s supposed to be here, but she’s in the hospital right now. She was admitted this morning, but she’s much better now.

On what the win over Mozambique means

“I’m happy for the team. Victor had a fantastic game. Lookman had a fantastic game. So we came out with the victory, and we’re happy.

“We won. That’s the key takeaway. It’s very important, it’s very important because people have been talking about all types of things that we cannot keep from conceding goals, but today again we proved that we can defend well”, the Sevilla forward added.

“It doesn’t matter who you’re playing against; we can defend well, we can be very detailed in our communication, and we came out with a clean sheet.”

On what representing Nigeria means

“I’m privileged to play for Sevilla, actually, don’t get me wrong, but playing for Nigeria is the greatest pride I have felt for I, for myself, for my family, and I, I’m very sure every player on the team feels that way.

“It’s a privilege, it’s a responsibility as well, and I’m very aware of that. So I’m grateful to God for this time in history, representing Nigeria in this way”, he concluded.
