Akor Adams, fresh from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he recorded two goals and two assists for Nigeria, made an immediate impact on his return from international duty as the Nigerian striker scored twice to rescue a point for Sevilla in a dramatic 2–2 draw away at Elche in LaLiga.

Fresh from helping Nigeria secure a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Adams was introduced at halftime with Sevilla trailing 2–0. What followed was a reminder of just how valuable the Super Eagles forward has become for both club and country.

Sevilla trail at the break

Sevilla endured a difficult first half at the Martínez Valero Stadium as Elche capitalised on defensive lapses to take a two-goal lead through Febas and Germán Valera. Despite creating chances and striking the woodwork, the visitors went into halftime with a mountain to climb.

Adams turns the game around

Head coach Matías Almeyda introduced Akor Adams at the start of the second half, and the change altered the flow of the match. The Nigerian striker added urgency and physicality to Sevilla’s attack, immediately troubling the Elche backline.

Sevilla’s pressure finally told in the 75th minute when Adams reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box to score. Deep into stoppage time, Sevilla were awarded a penalty after a handball, and Adams showed composure to convert from the spot in the 92nd minute, completing his brace.

AFCON momentum carries into LaLiga

Adams’ display was all the more impressive given his recent workload. He featured in Nigeria’s AFCON third-place playoff just days earlier before travelling back to Spain and being called upon again for Sevilla.

The striker showed no signs of fatigue, underlining his importance as Sevilla look to steady their season and climb away from danger.

What it means for Sevilla

The 2–2 draw halted Sevilla’s losing run and earned them a valuable point in their battle to avoid relegation, leaving them just two points clear of the drop zone.

For Adams, the performance reinforced his growing reputation as a reliable goal scorer. If Sevilla are to secure safety, contributions like this from the Nigerian forward could prove decisive.
