According to reports, the 24-year-old is now available for selection by the Super Eagles and could even make his debut as early as May when they compete in the 2026 Unity Cup.

Okonkwo had long been on the radar of the Nigerian national team, with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) working behind the scenes to convince him to make a switch to play for the country.

It was initially suggested that he would be available during the March international break, but he was ineligible for selection as FIFA were yet to approve his switch.

He was born in England to Nigerian parents and played for his country of birth at various youth levels, between the U15 to the U18 level.

Okonkwo came through the Arsenal academy and joined Wrexham initially on loan in 2023, before the deal was made permanent in 2024 and has become a mainstay for the club, making 119 appearances including 42 across all competitions this season.

What FIFA approval of Okonkwo’s switch means for the Super Eagles

With Okonkwo now eligible to represent the Super Eagles, it signals clear intent from the national team, having secured a talented young goalkeeper who can offer the long-term stability they need between the posts.

The 24-year-old now joins the list of options that also includes the likes of Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho, but his impressive performances at club level could give him an edge in the coming games.

Nigeria will compete in the Unity Cup in May and will also face Poland and Portugal in two high-profile friendly matches in June, giving head coach Eric Chelle the opportunity to test the goalkeeper.

The Super Eagles will then participate in the 2027 African Cup of Nations tournament qualifying campaign later in the year, hoping to book their spot in next year’s continental event.
