Nigeria’s Super Falcons continued their dominance on the continental stage with a 2–0 victory over Benin Republic in the first leg of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers played in Lomé, Togo, on Friday.

Goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo in the first half ensured the Falcons head into the return leg in a commanding position ahead of Tuesday’s rematch in Abeokuta.
A Fast Start from the Falcons
The Super Falcons began the game with intent, dominating possession and pinning the Beninese side deep into their half.
Nigeria’s early control paid off in the 24th minute when forward Chinwendu Ihezuo broke the deadlock with a composed finish, latching onto a delightful long pass from midfielder Deborah Abiodun before chipping the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 1–0.
Despite Benin’s attempt to respond with quick counterattacks, the Falcons’ defense, marshaled by Osinachi Ohale, remained compact and alert. The dominance in midfield from Abiodun and Toni Payne kept Nigeria in full control of the proceedings.
Okoronkwo Doubles the Lead

Nigeria’s persistence paid off again just before halftime. In first-half stoppage time, Esther Okoronkwo extended the lead, calmly slotting home another well-placed pass from Abiodun.
The goal capped a brilliant first half in which the Super Falcons had more of the possession and more shots on target compared to Benin.
Second-Half Control and Tactical Adjustments
After the break, head coach Justin Madugu’s side maintained composure, managing the tempo while creating occasional chances. Benin showed more spirit, pushing for a goal through Romaine Yenindo’s pace on the right wing, but goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie remained largely untested as the defense held firm.
Midway through the second half, Madugu made a triple substitution, introducing captain Asisat Oshoala, Christy Ucheibe, and debutant Joy Omewa for Okoronkwo, Ihezuo, and Taiwo Afolabi.
