Nigeria underlined their tags as favourites to win the prestigious African Cup of Nations in Morocco after breezing through the group stage and into the first knockout round.

Eric Chelle’s men enjoyed a flawless record in Group C, claiming a maximum of nine points from their three matches.

The Super Eagles got their campaign off to a flyer, defeating Tanzania 2-1 and then recorded a 3-2 win over Tunisia in their second game to book their sport in the knockout round.

Despite making several changes to the lineup in their group finale against Uganda, they breezed to another comfortable victory, sealing top spots with a 3-1 result.

The three-time African champions have now set up a clash against Mozambique in the round of 16 and are overwhelming favourites to progress to the quarterfinals.

Nigeria will be hoping to improve on their silver medal finish in Ivory Coast two years ago, when they lost to the home nation 2-1 in a dramatic final.

Awaziem eyes glory in Morocco

Chidozie Awaziem came on at halftime in the 3-1 win over Uganda in Nigeria’s last match and will be eyeing more of his solid display in defence as the tournament progresses.

According to the Nantes center-back, the Super Eagles will continue to improve as they chase a long-awaited first AFCON crown since 2013.

“This is a team that has been giving their best and fighting so Nigerians should keep expecting more like that because we are all here to fight and make our country proud”, the defender stated.

“I feel happy to be part of the team, to get some minutes but I’m most happy for the win and the nine points and topping the group stage.”

“They are performing in training sessions, talented players who play in different leagues. So I think they deserve to be here that’s why they are here. Everyone is ready, everyone is fit and just waiting for the opportunity from the coach.”

Nigeria eased past their opponents during the group stage and will be hoping for another impressive attacking display against Mozambique.

The Mambas have qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in their history, but their task doesn’t get any easier against the Super Eagles, who scored eight times during the group stage.

Kickoff for this clash is 8 PM next Monday, as Nigeria return to the Fez Stadium for their fourth game of the tournament.
