For most players, it was their first taste of action after the tournament, while some who missed out on a spot in Eric Chelle’s final squad also made notable appearances for their clubs.

With the battle for league title already shaping up across major European leagues, this past weekend was full of excitement with multiple Super Eagles stars making goalscoring performances to guide their clubs to victory.

In this article, SportPremi takes a look at some Nigerian stars that shone over the weekend;

English Premier League

Chukwueze scores, Awoniyi and Aina guide Nottingham Forest to crucial victory

In the English Premier League, match-day 23 action took place across multiple stadiums in the country.

At the Craven Cottage, two Nigerian players were in action in Fulham’s 2-1 comeback win over Brighton and Hove Albion. Alex Iwobi started the match, while Samuel Chukwueze and Calvin Bassey were left on the bench.

However, it was Chukwueze who made the most important contribution off the bench, coming on in the second half and scoring a fantastic goal to equalize for his side. It marked his sixth goal contribution in his last six matches for the Cottagers as well.

Harry Wilson would then score a late free-kick to give them a crucial win that lifts them up to seventh on the standings.

Elsewhere at the Gtech Community Stadium, Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi inspired Nottingham Forest to a 2-0 win that lifted them to five points above the drop zone.

Aina’s deflected cross found Igor Jesus for the first, before substitute Awoniyi scored a brilliant solo goal late in the match to complete the victory for his side. He latched on to a long ball and beat one defender, before slotting into the net for his first goal since last February.

Spanish La Liga

Adams continues red hot form

Akor Adams scored his third goal in two games since returning from the AFCON tournament to guide Sevilla to a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao. The 25-year-old netted a penalty kick in the 59th minute to help his side to a crucial win and up to 11th on the standings.

Turkish Super League

Osimhen makes history, Onuachu on target

Victor Osimhen made history once again with his goal in Galatasaray’s 3-1 win over Fatih Karagumruk. It was his 50th goal for the Turkish champions and he became the fastest player to reach the half-century mark, doing so in just 59 matches, beating Mauro Icardi’s record of 69 games.

Paul Onuachu also marked his return to action with a goal in Trabzonspor’s 2-1 win over Kasimpasa. The Super Eagles forward came on at halftime and needed only five minutes to make an impact with the opening goal of the match.

French Ligue One

Awaziem assist, Nwaneri scores on debut

In the French league, Chidozie Awaziem provided the assist for Mostafa Mohamed to score Nantes only goal as they fell to a 4-1 defeat at home to OGC Nice.

Nigerian-eligible forward Ethan Nwaneri made instant impact at Olympique Marseille, scoring just 13 minutes into his debut.

The on-loan Arsenal forward scored a spectacular goal to put Marseille 2-0 up and they went on to seal a 3-1 victory to close the gap between them and PSG in first position to seven points.
