Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella has officially been ruled out of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff matches after failing to recover from a knee injury, SportPremi understands.

The 26-year-old had been sidelined since September and was initially expected to return in October.
However, Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand confirmed the recovery process has taken longer than planned.
“With [Nathan] Tella, [the injury] was more difficult and complicated than we first thought. I think he’ll need the international break as well. It’s looking better and better, but I can’t say when [he’ll return] exactly,”

Tella will remain out until December, ruling him out of Nigeria’s crucial playoff clash with Gabon on November 13 in Rabat, Morocco.
Impact on Super Eagles attack
While Tella’s absence is a setback, it’s not expected to weaken the Super Eagles’ attacking options. The winger has featured only twice for Nigeria, debuting against Jamaica (registering an assist) and later playing 45 minutes in a 1–1 draw with Rwanda.
Head coach Eric Chelle still has an impressive pool of forwards, including Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, and Akor Adams, who were instrumental during the qualifiers.
Nigeria’s Playoff Path and Schedule
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the mini playoff tournament will be staged in Rabat, Morocco, from 13–16 November 2025.

It will feature Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo, with all games held at the El Barid Stadium and Prince Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex.
Nigeria will open against Gabon, and the winner will face either Cameroon or DR Congo for a ticket to the Inter-Continental Playoffs in March 2026, the final step toward qualification for the FIFA World Cup.
Leverkusen Focus on Full Recovery
At club level, Tella has made only four appearances and one assist this season for Bayer Leverkusen.
Coach Hjulmand emphasized that the club will prioritize his full recovery over rushing him back into action.
“It’s looking better and better, but I can’t say when [he’ll return] exactly. He’ll need the break and more rest, said the Danish tactician.
Leverkusen are managing his rehabilitation carefully, hoping to have him back fully fit before the Bundesliga’s winter fixtures resume.
Going forward
Nathan Tella’s injury may have come at an inconvenient time, but Nigeria’s attacking depth ensures the team remains strong heading into the World Cup playoffs.
His recovery, however, will be closely monitored by both Leverkusen and the Super Eagles as the winger looks to regain form ahead of a crucial year in his club and international career.
