Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle says Nigeria must adapt to the absence of midfielder Wilfried Ndidi for Sunday’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against DR Congo, SportPremi reports.

Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo clash at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Morocco in the final of the CAF playoffs on Sunday night, to determine Africa’s participant at the intercontinental playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup next year.
The Besiktas midfielder picked up his second caution of the qualifying series after he was booked in the first half of the win over Gabon on Thursday, which has ruled him out of the final clash.
The three-time African champions recorded a comprehensive 4-1 win over Gabon after extra-time on Thursday to book their spot in the final.
Akor Adams opened scoring in the 78th minute, before Mario Lemina leveled things minutes later to send the game into extra-time.
Chidera Ejuke and Victor Osimhen (2) scored in extra-time of the clash to seal a 4-1 win and keep Nigeria’s World Cup hopes alive.
DR Congo, meanwhile, scored a last-gasp winner to book their spot in the final against Nigeria with victory over Cameroon.
Chancel Mbemba scored the only goal of the encounter in stoppage time to seal a 1-0 win over the Indomitable Lions.
Chelle rues Ndidi’s absence
Speaking ahead of the crucial qualifying clash on Sunday as Nigeria look to take another giant stride towards qualification, Eric Chelle admitted that they are working on solutions to nullify the absence of Wilfried Ndidi.
“Ndidi is an important player for us. His experience, ability and leadership on the pitch are important for this team. But we will manage the situation. We have a large squad of players and we will make changes”, Eric Chelle said.
“Ndidi is still here with us and will support the team mentally and with his presence.”
How will Nigeria cope without Ndidi?
Wilfried Ndidi is Nigeria’s deputy captain and has been one of the most important players for the Super Eagles in recent years.
The 28-year-old provides stability in midfield with his ability to break up the opponents attack and also brings leadership and experience to the team.
His absence for the clash against DR Congo is a huge blow, considering the extreme importance of the match.
Eric Chelle could now be forced to deploy either Raphael Onyedika, who has impressed for Club Brugge this season, or Frank Onyeka, who was brilliant after coming on against Gabon in the role for Sunday’s clash.
The head coach could also start both players in a conservative lineup, pushing Alex Iwobi into the creative midfield role.
Whatever formation Eric Chelle chooses, the responsibility falls on the entire team to work together and remain organized as they hope to secure qualification.
