Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Brazilian attacker Rodrygo Goes remains in his plans for the season despite interest from Manchester City.

Rodgrygo has attracted a lot of interest this summer due to his uncertain future at Real Madrid.

Since Alonso was appointed as Los Blancos coach, Rodrygo got his first start in Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over newly-promoted Real Oviedo on Sunday.

However, the 24-year-old winger did not impress much and was replaced by Vinicius Jnr in the 63rd minute.

Judging by his first few games as Real Madrid coach, it is clear that Alonso’s setup can only take one of Rodrygo and Vinicius Jnr at a time.

Unfortunately for the former, Vini has been the more consistent player over the years and will likely get more game time.

For a player like Rodrygo, this might be a tough pill to swallow, as he has been a regular for the last four season.

Manchester City have been lurking around the Brazilian and look ready to swoop in if they sell Savinho to Tottenham.

However, after Real Madrid’s game against Oviedo, coach Alonso made a statement of intent about Rodrygo. The Spanish tactician asserted that he sees Rodrygo as an important player.

What Xabi Alonso Said About Rodrygo

“Rodrygo had a good match. In the first half, he shone with Carreras and Kylian,” Alonso said.

“Today, Oviedo’s playing style was very low, and it was hard to find that space, but I liked it. We need everyone, and Rodrygo is one more.”

Although Alonso’s comments mean that Rodrygo might be important to his plans, it does not assure the Brazilian will get a lot of game time.

This week will be critical for the parties involved, as the transfer window closes in a week.

Savinho’s potential exit is the only trigger for a Rodrygo bid from the Cityzens. So Manchester City are in a tight situation.
