However, they suffered an agonizing defeat in a major dent to their preparations.
Cameroon beat Nigeria in first of two pre-WAFCON friendly
With just few days until the commencement of the tournament, Nigeria played Cameroon in the first of their doubleheader friendly games on Saturday.
The Super Falcons had won 2-0 when both sides met in a friendly game last year with a brace from captain Rasheedat Ajibada and were hoping for a repeat of that performance.
Head coach Justin Madugu had made some changes to the squad for the game, with the major omission being six-time African Women’s player of the year winner Asisat Oshoala.
Meanwhile, there were several rotations made when the Super Falcons lineup was released, with England-based goalkeeper Comfort Erhabor making her debut, while Gift Monday and Ngozi Okobi also returned after a long absence.
Nigeria dominated the encounter but struggled to create much openings as the Cameroonians defended resiliently.
With the game heading for a scoreless draw, the home side snatched victory at the death, scoring through Yvana Mbomezomo to seal a memorable victory.
What next?
Nigeria will move on from the defeat and prepare for their second meeting with Cameroon on March 3, hoping for a victory this time around.
The Super Falcons will then commence their title defence at the 2026 WAFCON against Malawi on March 18.
