Cristiano Ronaldo asked for a move from Man United because he wanted to play in the Champions League next season. The Portuguese striker was indeed afraid of his goal tally in the Champions League event being overtaken by Messi
According to Athletic and quoted by Sky Sports, Cristiano Ronaldo wants to keep his status as the all-time top goal scorer in the UEFA Champions League. Currently, he is at the top of the list with 140 goals, 15 goals ahead of second-placed Lionel Messi.
If Ronaldo misses out of the Champions League next season, then he won’t add to his goals, which means Messi might surpass his record.

Therefore, Ronaldo insisted on moving. He is also said to want to beat Messi in the number of specific goals in the Champions League group stage. Currently, he is still three goals behind.
As it stands, no club is willing to sign Ronaldo. Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have rejected him.
Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has reportedly also contacted Napoli, but there has been no concrete continuation of this news. Atletico Madrid have also ruled out the possibility of bringing him back to the Spanish capital.
