The 24-year-old joined Die Werderaner on summer transfer deadline day from rivals Bayer Leverkusen, on a season-long loan deal.

The move came few weeks after Boniface had a proposed move to Italian side AC Milan break down, after failing medical examination at the club.

He was set to join the seven-time European champions, but the move did not materialize due to concerns over a recurrent knee injury.

The Nigerian forward joined Bremen and made the best possible start to his career at the club, providing an assist for Nigerian-eligible forward Justin Njinmah to score their fourth in a 4-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in September.

However, the Super Eagles forward has yet to replicate his early form at Bayer Leverkusen, which saw him clinch the rookie of the year award in their Bundesliga winning campaign.

He will hope to open his goal account for the club, when they resume league action against Heidenheim later on Saturday.

Werder Bremen taking steps to address Boniface’s fitness

The Nigerian striker has always had fitness concerns throughout his career and now appears to be overweight.

However, in quotes revealed in an interview, Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz revealed the club have began taking the necessary measures to ensure that Victor Boniface returns to a 100%.

“We have clearly identified the topics together with Victor and accompany him from all sides”, Fritz revealed.

“This concerns athletic training, physiotherapy and also the topic of nutrition with appropriate advice. We are close to him. He accepts our company, wants to work on himself.

“He works on the lawn without a doubt. There, Boniface shows more discipline than at the dining table”, he added.

“Victor also completes extra shifts, works up and trains on a day off on the weekend.”
