Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has revealed that he does not feel offended by the reaction of Vinicius Junior, following his substitution in last Saturday’s win over Espanyol.
The Brazilian winger returned to the starting lineup for the La Liga clash, after starting on the bench in the club’s 2025/26 UEFA Champions League opener against Marseille last Tuesday.
Despite enjoying an impressive game, the 2024 FIFA the Best Award winner was substituted in the 77th minute of the tie, with countryman Rodrygo coming on in his place.
Vinicius looked unhappy following his substitution after seeing his role reduced under the Spanish manager this season.
Real Madrid continued their 100% start to the season with a 2-0 win over Espanyol last weekend.
Eder Militao opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a stunning strike before Vinicius provided the assist for Kylian Mbappe to score Madrid’s second of the day.
The Brazilian’s struggles have also been highlighted by a 16th-placed finish in the 2025 Ballon d’Or awards, one year after finishing second and narrowly missing out to Manchester City’s Rodri in the 2024 event.

The 25-year-old is yet to complete 90 minutes for Los Blancos this season despite starting four of their five league games.
Xabi Alonso unfazed by Vinicius’ reaction
Xabi Alonso took over the helm of affairs at the former European champions in June and led the club to a semifinal exit at the Club World Cup in the summer.
He has overseen five victories from five matches in the league this season, with his side two points ahead of defending champions Barcelona, ahead of their trip to face Levante on Tuesday.
Speaking ahead of the Tuesday’s clash, Alonso revealed that Vinicius had to come off for fresh legs in the game.
“I’ve been a player too. When I was substituted, it isn’t always the nicest moment. It’s normal, it’s natural.
“We talked about things after the game, I like to be close to the players. I won’t make a big deal out of something small”, Alonso revealed.
“I spoke to the players after the game and they were all happy, both with the win and how we were feeling, and they want to keep going. That’s what we need, a collective spirit. All the players understand what we want.
“I’m happy with what [Vinícius] is doing. We’re just starting the season. He has to feel important and comfortable, and there’s a long way to go”, the Spaniard added.
