The Super Eagles forward returned from an injury layoff into the new campaign and has featured in the club’s last four league games, including coming on in the second half of the 3-1 win over Leeds United before the international break.

The 28-year-old suffered a season-ending injury in the previous campaign when he collided with the goal post in Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City.

Awoniyi’s journey back to full fitness has now hit a major obstacle, with his latest injury set to rule him out of this weekend’s clash against his former side.

The Nigerian striker began his career at Liverpool, but did not make a single league appearance for the Reds, as he spent majority of his time at the club on loan.

The Reds welcome the Tricky Trees to Anfield on match-day 12 of the 2025-26 English Premier League season on Saturday afternoon, with kickoff scheduled to be by 4 PM.

Sean Dyche gives latest injury update on team

Sean Dyche will be eyeing a second league win since taking over from Ange Postecoglou last month.

The former Burnley manager in his prematch conference ahead of the tough encounter, provided the updates regarding his squad.

On Taiwo Awoniyi

“It is just a settling period, it is nothing too serious, it is a grumbling knee, it is serious enough to stop him from loading it; from loading in daily training, but it is settling down”, Dyche revealed.

“Part of the recovery is to have it re-scanned to see where it is at. He is feeling good about himself, which is always a good sign.

We are managing to keep his fitness levels up in the gym. It has just taken a bit of time for the injury to calm down. We hope we are towards the end of that period”, he continued.

“He has improved, so credit to him for that. He will be a good figure to have back, particularly with his goal-scoring ability.

“I thought Taiwo did really well when he came on (against Leeds). Unfortunately, he has now picked up a bit of an injury, and we will see how that settles down.”

On Ola Aina

“Dilane Bakwa is making good progress. He is on the grass but not with us; he is with the medical staff and sports science staff. Ola Aina is very similar,” he added.
