The Super Eagles midfielder made his second appearance since making a move to the Sky Blues during the winter transfer window and was awarded the player of the match after another impressive display.

The 28-year-old was involved in the first goal as his interception in the middle of the park allowed Ephron Mason-Clark to open the scoring in the fifth minute, before Jack Rudoni doubled the lead in the 32nd minute with a superb strike.

The win marked their second consecutive victory after a dip in form and was also their first on the road since November 2025.

Middlesbrough’s goalless draw against Oxford United later in the day means Coventry City now have a three-point lead at the top of the Championship standings, with 13 games to go.

Onyeka hails performance after Coventry crucial win

Onyeka delivered another standout performance in midfield for Coventry City and was also involved in the first goal as they moved closer to an automatic promotion spot back to the English Premier League.

The midfielder hailed the team’s display during the game, after they sealed a second consecutive win in the league.

“It’s really nice, I like it, we just keep going. It’s a great win away from home,” Onyeka stated after the match.

“I know it’s quite difficult, but it’s all about winning. I’m happy that we got the win today and also the last game.

I mean, we know that especially in the first half when they tried to break us down, but we just decided to stay in the middle block. Don’t give them anything. I think that’s what helped us in the second half”, he concluded.

The Nigerian midfielder also opened up on the inspiration behind his career.

“My mum didn’t want me to play football. She was always upset when she saw us playing football because she wanted me to study, but I think at some point she just decided to let me do what I wanted, and she bought me my first pair of boots”, Onyeka said.

“She’s really happy now. She prays for me every single day, and she’s so proud to see me play at the highest level and represent Nigeria. She’s really happy.

My dad lost his job, so my mum had to be the one to cater for the family. She has her own kids and women’s clothing business, but it was quite a difficult period at one point.

“Then, when I was 16, I did a little bit of roof work because, you know, in Africa you have to do something to try and help assist the family, and I was doing that, and then I got the opportunity to go to FC Ebedei”, the experienced midfielder continued.

“It wasn’t easy, but looking back, I’m really proud of my journey and where I am today”, he concluded.

Coventry City will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Sheffield United, hoping for another win to move closer to a top-flight return.
