Jordan 2-2 Nigeria: 10-man Super Eagles held to shock draw by World Cup-bound Jordan

Jordan and Nigeria played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their final match at the four-nation invitational tournament in Antalya, Turkey on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles had defeated Iran 2-1 in their first encounter, while Jordan were held to a 2-2 draw by Costa Rica in the other encounter.

The Asian side took the lead in the first half through Al-Taamari, but Nigeria scored twice through Moses Simon and Emmanuel Fernandez to take the lead into the break.

However, Al Aldahod equalized for Jordan in the second half, before Nigeria had Alex Iwobi sent off late in the game as the clash ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

First half

Nigeria were had several absentees ahead of the clash with the likes of Maduka Okoye, Semi Ajayi and Bruno Onyemaechi all pulling out of the squad due to various reasons.

Eric Chelle made six changes from the win over Iran as Francis Uzoho started in goal, while Emmanuel Fernandez was handed his first start for the Super Eagles, partnering Igoh Ogbu at the heart of the defence.

Meanwhile, Yira Sor made his debut for the national team having previously featured for the U-20 side.

Nigeria started the clash on top dominating proceedings, but it was Jordan who took a shock lead in the 17th minute.

A clever set-piece routine from a free kick caught out the Nigerian wall and Al-Taamari’s long-range effort was palmed into the net by Francis Uzoho, who could have done better in saving the effort.

Nigeria thought they had scored the equalizer when Akor Adams scored in the 25th minute, but the striker had strayed offside in the buildup and the goal was ruled out.

However, the equalizer came almost immediately after a blocked effort from Ademola Lookman fell to Moses Simon, who fired in a superb left-footed effort from the edge of the box for his second goal in as many games.

The Super Eagles completed the comeback few minutes before halftime as Fernandez was on at at the far post to slot home into the net, grabbing his first international goal in just his second appearance.

The first half ended 2-1 in favour of Nigeria, who overcame the Jordanians early goal.

Second half

The Super Eagles started on top and Fernandez could have had a second, but the defender headed wide after a delivery from Lookman.

Alex Iwobi and Wilfried Ndidi came on in the second half, while Uzoho also came off with injury.

Jordan leveled the scores in the 77th minute through Al Aldahod, setting up a tense finish in the encounter.

Samuel Chukwueze also came on for his 58th cap as well as Philip Otele, who came on for his debut as Nigeria searched for a late winner.

Iwobi was then sent off in stoppage-time as Nigeria were reduced to 10. The Super Eagles midfielder was pulled back by a Jordan player but immediately grabbed his opponent and shoved him to the ground in front of the referee, resulting in a red card.

The match ended 2-2 as Nigeria were made to wait for the result of the clash between Iran and Costa Rica to determine the winner of the tournament.

What Next?

Nigeria will now shift their attention to the 2027 African Cup of Nations tournament qualifiers, which begins later in the year, after they missed out on the summer’s World Cup.
