Super Eagles forward Henry Onyekuru could be set for an early exit from his spell at Turkish club Genclerbirligi heading into the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old was dropped from the squad that suffered a 2-1 defeat to Galatasaray on Saturday, which now puts uncertainty over his future at the club.

Onyekuru had previously played in the Turkish league with Galatasaray and Adana Demirspor and returned to the country for a third stint at Genclerbirligi last summer.

However, things have not gone as planned as he has not provided any goal contributions in 19 appearances across all competitions, failing to rediscover the form he showed in the early stages of his career.

The Nigerian forward was then left out of training and the squad for their last weekend clash and could now face an even longer spell on the sidelines by the club.

Onyekuru left out of Genclerbirligi squad

Genclerbirligi head coach Volkan Demirel revealed that the forward’s uninspiring performances and poor run contributed to dropping him from the squad entirely ahead of the clash against Galatasaray.

“We are not satisfied with his performance,” Demirel said.

“Onyekuru is our player, he has one more year on his contract.

“I got a good performance from him in one match where I played him, and I put him back on the field in the Başakşehir match. But I didn’t get the performance I wanted in that match. In my subsequent report, I stated that I had other thoughts, but it went in different directions.

“Onyekuru is our football player. If he performs well, I will support him. Because I want to get performance from every player”, he concluded.

With just a few months until the summer transfer window and with Onyekuru looking unlikely to return to the first team at Genclerbirligi, both parties could come to a mutual agreement to terminate the contract of the Nigerian forward, which would offer him a possible route to leave the club.
