The Sky Blues have already secured promotion to the English top flight for the first time since 2001 and recently sealed the EFL Championship title last weekend.

Super Eagles midfielder Onyeka joined the club during the winter transfer window from Brentford and played a major role in their promotion success.

The Nigerian midfielder had struggled to get regular playing minutes at the Bees, mostly getting cameos off the bench and even went on loan to Bundesliga side Augsburg last season.

However, he has found a more prominent role since moving to Coventry in January, featuring regularly for Frank Lampard’s side and also contributing a goal and an assist in his 14 appearances till date.

Onyeka is expected to sign a permanent deal at the Sky Blues in the summer, as they look to secure their key players ahead of the top-flight next season.

What Frank Lampard said about Frank Onyeka

Frank Lampard has remarkably guided Coventry City to promotion to the Premier League for the first time since they suffered relegation in the 2000-01 season.

Speaking ahead of their final league game of the season against Watford on Saturday, the former Chelsea midfielder expressed admiration for the Nigerian midfielder and his impact at the club.

“Frank has been brilliant. He was a profile of a player we needed in that moment and he’s come in and given us everything we need, which has really helped the balance of our midfield with what Grimesy does and whoever plays in that 10, how they play”, Lampard said.

“The other thing he (Onyeka) has offered is an incredible humility and work ethic. He’s come in and just breezed into the squad and the dressing room and he’s come down from the Premier League as an international player and he is so humble.

“I love that and it’s good for some of our players to see what that looks like”, the Chelsea legend concluded.

With promotion and championship secured, Coventry City will be looking to end the season on a high with a victory in their final match of the season.
