FA respond after Lionesses leave England fans 'disappointed' with airport no show

The Lionesses Of England returned home on Tuesday after their World Cup final loss to Australia. However, the fans who came to greet them were left feeling disappointed.

The Lionesses have returned from Australia following their World Cup exit. Still, their fans were left waiting in disappointment as the players departed the airport without acknowledging their supporters who came to see them.

On Sunday, the Lionesses of England faced a talented Spanish Women’s team, and they ended their quest for a first World Cup title with a heartbreaking defeat to Spain.

The disappointment among the squad, as well as across the country, was palpable. Speaking after the full-time whistle, boss Wiegman stated, “Everyone is very disappointed. I think we can be very proud of ourselves [but] it just doesn’t feel that way at this moment. That takes a little bit of time.”

“But everything we’ve done – how we have grown into the tournament; the challenges we have before and during it; how we have adapted to situations. We have given everything that we could.”

After Sunday’s heartbreaking match, the focus swiftly shifted to the journey back home. The warm reception they encountered is a testament to how deeply the Lionesses have captured the hearts of the nation and the world during the World Cup tournament.

Video clips circulating on social media captured the heartwarming scene at Sydney Airport, where supporters cheered and applauded the Lionesses as they readied to board their flight to the UK. Players eagerly signed autographs and posed for pictures with their dedicated fans.

Amidst the lingering ‘what could have been’ sentiments within the squad, manager Wiegman found a moment to smile and wave at the dedicated Lionesses supporters. Despite a grueling 22-hour flight back to Heathrow, the warm reception for the Lionesses upon their return home remained undiminished.

However, the scenes at Heathrow were a stark contrast. Approximately 40 eager fans, including young children, were left disappointed as the players departed the airport without acknowledging them.

Supporters had gathered at Heathrow Terminal 3, hopeful of greeting their heroes upon their return. Some had even spent the night at the airport in their eagerness to catch a glimpse of the reigning European champions. Regrettably, the squad exited through a private route, evading their waiting supporters.
