10 Fun Facts About Sadio Mané

1. His Story Begins With A Lowly Beginning

Sadio Mané was born on April 10, 1992, in Bambali, Senegal, a village in the Sedhiou hamlet. His father was a local Imam. Mané viewed football as his way out of poverty. “It was tough because I didn’t have anyone pushing me to achieve my dream,” he told The Guardian in a 2020 interview. “But I never stopped dreaming.”

His father’s death after a fight with illness had a profound impact on his life. “When I was young, my dad always said how proud he was of me,” he continued. “He was a big-hearted man.” His death had a significant impact on me and the rest of my family. I told myself, ‘Now I have to do my best to support my mother.’ That’s difficult to deal with when you’re so young.”

2. He had to flee in order to pursue his career.

Despite his family’s early opposition, Mane may have believed that his dream of becoming a professional player would one day come true. An early prohibition on his playing the game resulted in his first absence from the family home. Still, an agreement with his mother allowed him to continue playing as long as he returned home and focused on both his academic and religious studies.

Unable to maintain his existence in the hamlet, he fled at the age of 15 to Dakar, Senegal’s capital, where his life would soon change.
