Story of the match
Fulham had suffered a 2-0 defeat to Everton in their previous league game before the international break, while Sunderland scored a last-gasp equalizer in an exciting 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
Alex Iwobi, made his 303rd appearance in the English Premier League, three shy off Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Zaha into the top three most appearances by an African player.
The home side enjoyed the better possession and chances of the first 45 minutes, but were unable to break down the discipline Sunderland defense.
Marco Silva made some substitutions in the second half in a bid to inject some urgency into the team, with Chukwueze coming on as well.
The 26-year-old produced a moment of real quality late in the game, delivering the cross for Jimenez to tap home the winner for their side.
Despite spending only 26 minutes on the pitch, no player created more chances and completed more dribbles than the Nigerian forward.
Iwobi hails Fulham’s display
Alex Iwobi played in a more deeper role against Sunderland before coming off in the 89th minute for Harrison Reed.
The Nigerian midfielder hailed Fulham’s performance in the clash, as they returned to winning ways after defeat in their last outing.
“Our home form has been really good. They’re a tough side and they’ve been doing really well, but we have the belief that we can perform against anyone”, the Super Eagles playmaker revealed.
“We created so many chances today. It was almost one of those where you wonder if it will ever go on.
“Credit to the lads, we kept on believing and thank god one of them went in”, Iwobi added.
“We don’t fear anyone in the league. We give our respect to Sunderland. But now it’s all about consistency for us to go and get the results we need.
“In the week, we were working on different ways to break down Sunderland. It was working, but we couldn’t put the ball in the net.
“As long as we can keep clean sheets, then we’ll always create chances to score.”
Fulham’s next piece of action is a London derby clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next weekend.
