Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo has identified Fulham defender Calvin Bassey as a very tough opponent to play against.

The Super Eagles defender has developed into one of the most standout centre-backs in the Premier League since his arrival in 2023 and has become a mainstay at the heart of Fulham’s defence.
Bassey finished second in the player of the season ranking for the club in his first season and was then named the outright winner in the last campaign, highlighting the remarkable improvement he has made since arriving at the club.
This season, Bassey has played 23 times across all competitions for Fulham, including 21 in the Premier League of which he started 19.
He also played a key role at the 2025 African Cup of Nations tournament, playing six games as Nigeria finished with bronze medal at the tournament held in Morocco.
Mbeumo lauds Bassey’s attributes
Mbuemo faced Bassey during his time at Brentford and has also faced him twice in the Premier League this season with Manchester United.
While speaking in an interview, the Cameroon forward named the Nigerian defender’s speed and strength as two key qualities that makes him difficult to play against.
“Calvin Bassey, damn. I think he really stood out in games”, Mbeumo stated.
“Even the two previous games against them, he was solid. Yeah, Calvin Bassey is a beast – the guy is a beast. He’s too strong, it’s crazy, and on top of that he’s fast too. It’s not cool to play against him”, he concluded.
Bassey will be expected to be at the heart of defence for Fulham once again this weekend when they face struggling Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
Mbeumo, meanwhile, will be hoping to return to the scoresheet for Manchester United when they face Aston Villa on Sunday.
