The Nigerian winger was substituted just after the hour mark of Los Rojiblancos penalty shootout defeat to Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final last Saturday.

Lookman had scored in the first half of that encounter and was a threat on the left side for Atletico, putting the Real Sociedad right-back on toast throughout the first half.

It then came as a surprise when he was taken off in the second half, with Atletico going on to lose the game on penalties after Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez both missed their attempts from 12 yards.

Lookman has scored seven goals and provided four assists across all competitions since joining Atletico Madrid in a €35 million deal from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, with only Alvarez providing more since his arrival at the club.

Spanish side Madrid have now confirmed that Ademola Lookman, alongside Sorloth, both suffered injury concerns during Saturday’s Copa del Rey defeat and will be well managed to avoid aggravating their conditions.

“Ademola Lookman and Alexander Sørloth finished the Copa del Rey final with discomfort. The club’s medical services have performed tests that advise the utmost caution to avoid the risk of injury, so they will follow an individualized plan in the coming days, working outside the group. The evolution of these discomforts will mark his return to training with his teammates”, Atletico Madrid revealed in a statement.

Atletico Madrid are now sweating on the fitness of Lookman and will be hoping to have him available for their upcoming Champions League semifinal first leg clash against Arsenal on May 29.

The Nigerian forward might not be risked for Wednesday’s clash at Elche and the weekend fixture against Athletic Bilbao, with one eye on the clash against Arsenal where his influence on the left wing would be greatly needed.
