Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, a key player for the Super Eagles, may be absent from the crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final clash with South Africa. This potential setback arose as Osimhen did not travel with the team on their journey from Abidjan to Bouake.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to take on continental arch-rivals South Africa in the initial semi-final of the tournament on Wednesday in Bouake, with the coveted spot in Sunday’s final at stake.

The Nigeria team released a statement just before their departure on Monday night, revealing that Victor Osimhen is grappling with an abdominal issue. Consequently, he will remain in Abidjan until receiving medical clearance.

According to the statement from the Super Eagles official handle:

“Victor Osimhen will not join us on this trip as a result of an abdominal discomfort. Team medics confirmed that he has been placed under close watch with a member of the medical team staying behind in Abidjan with him.

“If cleared by the tomorrow [Tuesday] morning, he will join the rest of the squad before 5pm.”

Despite scoring one goal in the AFCON tournament, Osimhen stands out as a key player for the Super Eagles, forming a potent attacking trio with Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon, crucial to Nigeria’s qualification for their 16th AFCON semi-final.

Osimhen’s recent abdominal discomfort, which prompted his late substitution in the quarterfinal against Angola, raises uncertainties about his availability. Losing the reigning African Player of the Year would be a significant setback for the Nigerian team, as their offensive strategy relies heavily on his dynamic play.

Osimhen has played a pivotal role in four of Nigeria’s six goals, including scoring in the opening 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea. In case he misses the crucial match, coach Jose Peseiro has options in Kelechi Iheanacho, Paul Onuachu, and Terem Moffi, with Onuachu being the sole substitute for Osimhen in the tournament so far.
